Training

Jiu-Jitsu classes are divided into three types of instruction, providing the student with a fully rounded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) education.

The 1st week of every month includes MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).  MMA helps you deal with real self-defense.  Situations such as punches and kicks and even weapons are incorporated into this training.  We wear gloves and protective gear at all times.  That way we can practice defending ourselves against a real attack or street fight.  MMA classes are a lot of fun and a great confidence builder.  Self Defense techniques are taught throughout the month.  Most people get into martial arts for self defense.  MMA adds instruction to get your opponent to the ground; BJJ instructs on how to dominate your opponent while avoiding personal harm. “Self-defense teaching must be learned and understood…” Helio Gracie insisted. You can’t argue with that!

The majority of the time (the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the month) the Gi (Kimono) is worn.  This way the student becomes familiar with BJJ in its most basic and traditional form.  The Gi helps you to become more technical and builds great defense.  The Gi offers a greater variety of holds, submissions, and options for sweeps utilizing the grips on the fabric.  Training with the Gi  gives you the ability to control and submit your opponent utilizing many different and wonderfully clever chokes that only traditional BJJ teaches.  It’s a must!

The last week of every month is when the Gi is shed and only shorts and shirts are worn.  This is called Submission Grappling.  Submission grappling is sweeping the world because it brings together competitors from all styles (wrestling, sambo, judo, etc.). It’s a mental & physical game that anyone can play.  It’s a much faster game, because there are not as many grips and handles on your opponent.  There are a lot fewer chokes and submissions.  It’s a different skill than competition style jiu-jitsu, but it’s a lot of fun!

We offer a very well rounded program.  It’s a great place, with great people, and great instruction.  Don’t take our word for it.  Come take a free class and see for yourself!
